Chapter One

Milan's Heart was pounding. She didn't know what to think of Sunset Children's Home.

Everything felt so strange and new.... and scary!
All she remembered from her past was her name and every now and then she had visions of her mothers face, but even those were occurring less and less as time went by.

She glanced around and noticed a girl who looked nice, so she went over and introduced herself.

It took Milan 2 endless minutes to get the attention of the girl.

"What do you want?" She snapped.

Milan blushed.

"Nothing. Um... I'm Milan. What's your name?"

 A tense silence followed.

The girl's words echoed in Milan's ears.

She was about to turn to leave when she felt a firm hand on her shoulder.

Milan whirled around to see the girl glaring at her.
In a mean voice she yelled,
"Listen, Milan. This is my home. Not yours. It will NEVER be yours. The same goes for David."

Milan took a step back.
"I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHO DAVID IS! *-*"

The girl smirked,
"Good. Let's keep it that way."

"I think I'd like to meet David." Milan said, and then regretted it.
The girl just walked away angrily, never glancing back.

Milan stood in her new bedroom, wondering what to do.

It was hardly 10 minutes before she heard light footsteps coming towards her door!

What if it's that girl from before? Ohmigosh.

Her heart raced as she waited to see who it was.

As a boy walked into the room, she let out a sigh of relief.

But... was this David?

She hated to imagine what would happen if that other girl found out he was in her room.

Is that... David? Oh no... that girl told me David was hers. She'd probably be furious that he was in my room. Wait, what is he doing here anyway?
The two stood there just staring at each other for what seemed like forever.

Milan put her hand out to shake his.

"Hi, I'm Milan. Who are you?"

Please, PLEASE, don't let this be David.

"I'm David."

Darn.

They started a conversation and become friends.

"So have you met Sheniquoa yet?" David asked Milan.

"Who's Sheniquoa?"

David described her.

"I think I have. She screamed at me when I introduced myself. She must have something against purple hair!"

They both laughed.

"So what are you doing in my room, David?"

"Your room? This is my room though!"

Uh oh.

"Woah. Um, you should go ask Ms.Thalia whose room this is."

He agreed and left the room.

Ms. Thalia was setting the buffet table for dinner when David arrived.

"Ms. Thalia, whose room is the one on the end?"

She glanced at him for a second before saying,

"You are sharing it with Milan now. There isn't any more room in the house for everyone to have seperate rooms now. Remind me later to remove the double bed and place the twin beds."

"Yes, ma'am."

Before David could get back into the room to tell Milan what Ms. Thalia said, she was already walking to the buffet table.

"Milan?" He called to her.

"Whose room is it? Did she say?"

"It's both of ours, Milan."

"Oh."

Bria sighed. She was only allowed outside her room to eat dinner and go to the bathroom.

She had to make the most of it. She hardly knew anyone here, other than Sheniquoa.

"Hey, Sheniquoa!"

"Go away, loser."

Ouch. Bria felt sad that her only friend deserted her.
David picked around in the salad for his favorite part. The croutons.

"Come out my little precious bread buns ^-^"
He sang to the salad.

Sheniquoa was disgusted, thinking he was talking to her.

Cherokee looked from David to Sheniquoa to the new girl. Who was she anyway?

Milan wondered where the blonde girl she had seen earlier went. Maybe we could be friends if I find her!

David was exhausted. The day was exciting! He met a new friend, and had finally broken up with Sheniquoa past day.

He was practically falling asleep standing up!

But he had to brush his teeth so he walked back into the bedroom to wake Milan, so she could brush her teeth too!.
 Then he remembered.

He was supposed to remind Ms. Thalia to move the double bed and put the twin beds in it's place.

Well, he thought, I can wake up Milan and we can brush our teeth first. THEN, I'll go get Ms. T.

"Pssst! Milan! Wake up!"

David started to hum, then sing, the song he made up with his cousins as a little kid.

"Brushing buddies makie brushing better because brushing buddies make the counter wetter! Brushing buddies, Brushing buddiessssssssss!"

Okay, so maybe it wasn't Top 40 material, but it was a tradition for David, that he wasn't going to break.

Milan was super tired as well, and asked David to go remind Ms. Thalia so she could sleep again.

David reached out to pat Ms. Thalia, in her bed, awake when he realized, that isn't Ms. Thalia!

He groaned. It was Bria! He had forgotten that she slept in here whenever Ms. Thalia was pulling an all-nighter.

He crept over to the crib and noticed that it was empty! Someone had kidnapped Ms. Thalia's baby, Jack!

He heard footsteps and saw Ms. Thalia's shadow.
David started to say, "Ms. Thalia! Someone kidnapp-" and then saw Jack in her arms.

She asked what he needed, and he reminded her as planned.

She moved the double and placed the twin beds in the bedroom.

By the time the remodel was complete, it was 6 am! The bus was coming in 1 hour and the two had barely gotten 20 minutes of sleep!

Milan groaned and got out of bed.

"David. Dude. Wake up. It's morning."

He was reluctant to go to school but she convinced him.

Vince Tam the Mailman was disgusted at Ms. Thalia and this place.

"Too many children. *snorfle snorfle* I HATE CHILDREN >:C *snorfle snorfle*"

He put the mail in the mailbox and took off down the street towards his truck screaming and snorfling.

Milan stepped out of the gate towards the bus.

Ms. Thalia told them all that this would be their only day of school for a very long time.

Bria was devastated. She couldn't go to school, couldn't meet any friends and couldn't go outside of her room. She was still dazed about Sheniquoa's remark. How could this happen? Her only friend hates her. She felt tears prick her eyes.

Chapter one end.
